These studens are called VIPS and are pulled at their recess time once each week. I have a different team for each day of the week. They have a name tag that also acts like a hall pass. I change helpers at mid-term to allow more students the opportunity to help out. I also rewarded them with a pizza party at the end of their term and give them little thank-yous such as pencils and stickers on holidays. I encouraged the teachers to use it as an incentive for some students who may never have the opportuntity to be involved otherwise. I have had very few behavior issues. Last year, it did not work out well because their recess time was my lunch time, but I did have some students who stopped by each morning to help set up for the day. I am in 50% rotation right now. \n
\nI give them pizza every 3 weeks because they work so hard.
\nThey get at least 3 grades each week:
\n ~ Customer Service: Are they proactive in helping students and teachers? Friendly?
\n ~ Section Organization: (see chart when I send it) For each mistake, one point is deducted. I always let them know when I'll be grading sections.
\n ~ Wednesday Job: They have a cleaning job on Wednesdays
\n ~ Computer Clean-Up: (first day of each month) Each aide is assigned 4-5 computers to clean (see directions when I send them)

She helps me get volunteers at the beginning of the year and helps with reminding and scheduling volunteers during book fairs. Our school has a coffee the first day of school encouraging parents to sign up. I make the schedule and we try our best to have the parents volunteer in the library when their children come. It seems I have more parents willing to show up that way. Some years I have done a volunteer training day; however, I have found that I just have to reteach them when they come to volunteer. I also make sure to recognize and recruit volunteers in our weekly newsletter. My volunteers come at the same time on a two week rotation, so they come say every other Monday. I make sure they have a calendar and contact numbers of the other volunteers in case they are not able to make their day. I will say that it has been a struggle to keep some volunteers and fill spots because so many parents have gone back to work with two income households or have babies in the middle of the year. This year I found Mondays were the hardest days for me. For the past four years I have only had a half time aide, and she is absolutely wonderful! I really don't know what I would do without her. Anyway, Mondays were tough days and so I trained three fifth grade girls to help with checking in and out. They helped me with my kindergarten classes. I also trained my fourth and fifth graders how to shelf books. I figured if they could find them they could figure out how to shelf. I will admit they did not do the job perfectly, but neither do the volunteers. This seemed to help and I plan on doing this again even more so.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
